Chinese smartphone manufacturer, OnePlus announced partnership with Finnish telecom network carrier Elisa to launch a 5G device in the second quarter of the 2019 year. The smartphone will be one of the first 5G devices to launch in Finnish market.
Earlier OnePlus partnered with British mobile network operator EE to advance its 5G device portfolio in the UK. Elisa was also the first carrier partner of OnePlus and now with Elisa launching its commercial 5G network in Finland soon, the longstanding business relationship between the companies will extend to include 5G devices.
Founder and CEO of OnePlus, Pete Lau said they are closely working with partners such as Elisa to create innovative 5G smartphone. He added that the 5G revolution is set to make gigantic changes in industries including healthcare, gaming, mixed reality and technology. 5G will become the catalyst to reimagine future.
Antti Ihanainen, the director at Elisa, said the partnership with OnePlus is a natural choice as it offers excellent operating system along with great gaming capabilities for the users. He added that their 5G network counts among the first in the world and one of the most developed.
The Increased capacity, better latency and improved network speed offered by 5G technology unlocks doors to a new possibilities. For the first time, with the high speeds offered by 5G, cloud gaming could become a reality. Cloud gaming which combines device side processing and cloud computing to enable high quality gaming, will no longer be restricted to expensive console/laptops with the arrival of 5G. The OnePlus devices will make it possible for gamers to play high-end games on their smartphones with 5G.
With the new launch, OnePlus will join the ranks of the first few smartphone manufacturers in the world to launch a 5G smartphone in the market. The OnePlus 5G smartphone will feature Snapdragon X50 modem with Snapdragon 855 processor. The company has not yet revealed the price of the new 5G-enabled smartphone, but it is expected to be higher than older-generation devices of the company. CEO of OnePlus, Lau has hinted that the price would be $200 to $300 more than other OnePlus smartphones in the market.
Other smartphone manufacturers who are also preparing to launch 5G-enabeld smartphones include Sharp, HTC, Fujitsu, Motorola, LG, Oppo, Vivo, Sony and HMD Global. Samsung recently announced that its 5G smartphone will be available in limited markets later in 2019 where 5G network is available.
